Growth Habit: Herbaceous perennial, erect to 8 feet tall. Leaves: Simple, lance-shaped, smooth margins, opposite or whorled. Stems: Branched, terminating in flowering stalks. Flowers: Rose-purple, 5 to 7 petals with numerous stamens, in long, vertical racemes. Roots: Thick, woody. Reproduction: seeds: produced in two-valved capsules, seeds are tiny and prolific; vegetative: mature plants can send up new shoots from roots.
Native to Eurasia. Found in riparian and aquatic areas.
