The use of certified noxious weed free forage and mulch is a preventative program that is integrated into the Weed Management System to limit the spread or introduction of noxious weeds that are considered detrimental, destructive, injurious or poisonous.
Enforcement of the hay quarantine in Teton County, Wyoming became effective on May 18, 1990 which included the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Wyoming Department of Agriculture, and Teton County Weed & Pest.
The hay quarantine was put into affect to "control" the entry of infested farm products through implementing a certification program.
The standards of this program are designed:
- To provide assurance to all participants that forage certified through this program meet a minimum acceptable standard
- To provide continuity between provinces and states in the program
- To limit the spread of noxious weeds through forage and mulch
Certified weed free forage products include: straw, alfalfa/grass hay, forage pellets/cubes, alfalfa hay, grain hay, and grass hay.
Where is certified forage required?
Weed free forage is required on all United States Forest Service lands, in National Parks, Bureau of Reclamation land, military locations, tribal lands as well as National Fish and Wildlife refuges and in many situations on Bureau of Land Management areas. Restrictions may apply to other lands administered by provincial, county, state or federal agencies.
